Compassion focused therapy with The Inner Movement | Coalville

At The Inner Movement CIC we have two trained Compassion focused therapy (CFT) therapists, Lucianne Robyn & Dylan Thomas.

What is Compassion focused therapy?

Compassion-focused therapy (CFT) aims to help promote mental and emotional healing by encouraging people in treatment to be compassionate toward themselves and other people. Compassion, both toward the self and toward others, is an emotional response believed by many to be an essential aspect of well-being. Its development may often have the benefit of improved mental and emotional health.

Compassion Focused Therapy in North West Leicestershire | Specialists in Trauma, (PTSD & C-PTSD), Attachment disorders, Anxiety disorders, Depression

Compassion Focused Therapy (CFT) promotes wellbeing and healing by encouraging people to be compassionate towards themselves and others. As a result, clients learn to manage their moods. Specifically, they gain knowledge on how to decrease anxiety and negative self talk. They also learn how to increase self acceptance. Certainly, all types of therapy are about sympathetic care. However, CFT places self compassion as the main goal throughout treatment.

The CFT approach is rooted in three emotion regulation systems.

Therapy with us

we have delivered talks and workshops on compassion, compassion focused therapy & trauma informed practice & wellbeing in a range of settings; mental health settings, workplaces, private sector organisations, colleges to a range of audiences; young and old. We talk about our five principles of compassion which are adapted from compassion focused therapy and the work of Professor Paul Gilbert.

Stages of Compassion Focused Therapy (CFT)

1 / Building a therapeutic relationship

Firstly we develop a relationship of trust, openness, warmth and support. This relationship is critical to therapy so we spend as much time is needed to enable individuals to feel safe and safe to share without fear of judgement. A working therapeutic relationship is key to a successful outcome.

2 / Pyschoeducation

In compassion focused therapy we spend time educating clients about the science of their challenges; whether it is the science of depression, trauma or specific diagnosis; such as borderline personality disorder or Reactive attachment disorder (RAD). We discuss the science of evolution and the fact that we all have tricky brains, and the emotional regulation system.

3 / Compassionate mind training

Once we have developed a working relationship with clients we can then develop skills and mind training specific to the individual such as; building a safe place imagery, building a compassionate self and building a compassionate other. We also at this stage teach clients grounding, soothing and emotional regulation techniques.

4 / Intergrating past experiences with compassion

We work in a person centred way, so we work with clients to understand what is important for them to discuss, work through or what past experiences they want to integrate. We ask the client what is important to them, and what personal blocks they have that stop them giving or receiving compassion and empathy.

5 / Using compassion in everyday life

Finally we help clients start to use compassion and any new perspectives they may have gained to bring them to their present life.

Beauty in Nature
A key motto in Compassion focused therapy (CFT) is think with the client, not for them.  We work with individuals as a team to help them understand, treat and recover from mental health difficulties.
